BROKEN INTO GOT THE INTRUDER - NOW GOING TO BE LET

I have recently been broken into - the person broke into the conservatory - was heard by a neighbour, the neighbour called the police. Upon hearing someone arriving at the property the person jumped out of the upstairs window onto the conservatory roof and broke their leg. The person caused £700 worth of damage to the property conservatory.....and now the police are saying that their is nothing that they can charge the person with as THEY DIDN'T TAKE ANYTHING FROM THE PROPERTY. The person previously lived in the property - and claimed to the police that at the time of the incident was collecting post !!

please could you advise if this is correct law (from the police)

also could this person try and claim damages for a broken leg???

Hi,

It would appear that the intruder has avoided prosecution by lying about the event. If i were in your shoes I would ask the police for a report of the event and also see what was said in your side of the story. If the person used to live at the property and his tenancy agreement has ended. The correct way to collect post would simply be to ring the bell and ask you if they could get the post. From what your saying this doesn't appear to be the case in which case if he lived there he does not any more. Also questions should be rasied in regards to how he entered the property in the 1st place and if he broke in then the poilice should have looked at how entry was forced and if there was damage to the property, when the person entered. There is a lot of unanswered questions here. I would certianly speak to the police if I were in your positon for more answers and clarity.
