Hi
I have worked for a local authority for the past 4 years. 3 of those years was as a trainee towards a degree. at the time we were informed that at the end there was no guarantee of a job, we would have to apply and if succesful we would have to stay for 2 years.
We did not sign anything to have to agree to these terms.
I have now qualified. I have successfully secured a job but they have offered me an area of the work that i do not wish to work in. basically the vacancies are 'were there are gaps'. I now want to leave but have been told that that i would need to pay the money back. When i stated to the HR woman that i did not sign anything her response was that it was a given in 'good faith' basically there is nothing in writing or legal terms to bind any of us to the local authority.
do i have to pay them back? do they have a leg to stand on?
