Money kept by her mother

Postby BUZZ » Mon Jun 08, 2009 9:29 am

Hello everyone
I hope Im in the right place, Please could someone give me some advice.
I am divorced and my daughter lives with me.

when my daughter was born, her granddad , on her mothers side, set up an account
that was payable when she reached 17. That date has now come.

Her mother has said that this money / account had to be put into her name when it was first
started. This sum of money has now been released into her mothers account,

My daughter would now like her money, she has said she will open a savings account
And place ¾ of it there. The rest will go into her existing account.

The problem is her mother will not let her have all the money. She has given her £50
to open a new account, her mother is going to keep the money in her account but also
wants the cash card from the new account when it arrives and will only give my daughter
any money In dribs and drabs. Whilst I can see the logic in her mothers idea in preventing
our daughter dipping into it all the time, surely this is wrong.

This is my daughters money, my daughter wants her money.

Can her mother stop her from having this money, which is rightfully hers.
Many thanks and all answers greatly recieved :D

Hi,

It would be best for your daughter to contact customer service where the money and account are held and firstly ask them why the money wasn't transferred to your daughters account directly. The reason for this most probably would be that she has not hit the age of 18 yet. Your daughter could also request a copy of the agreement when the account was set up to see who is entitled to access the money and see whether any rules have been broken.
